The secret to a slow fashion wardrobe you actually love

We’ve all been there, standing and staring at your wardrobe full of clothes, feeling like we have nothing to wear.

In a world full of fast fashion trends and seasonal looks, we’re programmed to chase that feeling when you buy something new. It’s a high that we all chase but it doesn’t last for long.

Slow fashion is about creating a mindful wardrobe full of clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident in your own style.

No more fear of missing out!

Fast fashion and the media rely on your fear of missing out. That combined with quick discounts/sales create a false sense of urgency that makes us rush into buying things we might not need.

Slow fashion makes us take a pause before buying a piece and ask ourselves ‘does this piece bring me comfort and joy?’.

If you think about your favourite clothes, they’re often linked to a memory or a feeling. There’s a nice satisfaction in wearing something that has a story. Also, there is no shame in repeating an outfit, I personally have never understood it, is it not a way that the media try to make you buy more?

Rediscover what you already own

Before adding to your wardrobe, take some time to take a look at what you already have. It’s sometimes nice to have a look at your daily favourites and the ones that probably don’t fit so perfectly or were an impulse buy. Try to mix and match your full wardrobe, you can always look at Pinterest for inspiration!

Use the mindful purchase checklist

I find it useful to have a little checklist I can refer back to when I’m buying something new.

  • Can I pair this with at least 3 items in my wardrobe?

  • Will I wear this 20+ times?

  • How does the fabric feel?

  • Would I buy this if it wasn’t on sale right now?

  • Can I wait a week before buying? - This one helps with impulse buys!

Give a little love to what you already have and create a slow fashion wardrobe

The most sustainable item of clothing is always the one that’s already in your wardrobe. If you have the time, it’s good to invest in your own sewing skills, mend your clothing and resew that button!

Building a slow fashion collection of clothes for yourself isn’t an overnight thing or about following any strict rules. I think it’s about following your own rules, putting more thought into what you buy and trying to pay attention to what you truly like.
